Vision Statement

The Keewatin Patricia District School Board puts students first by creating a culture of learning.

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board is a progressive and proud public school board that serves the communities of beautiful Northwestern Ontario.  We have schools in the communities of Kenora, Sioux Narrows, Vermilion Bay, Ear Falls, Red Lake, Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Ignace, Pickle Lake, Savant Lake and Upsala as well as serving the educational needs of many neighbouring and far north First Nation communities.

Students in a KPDSB school always come first and programming options are continually expanding to meet the needs of a diverse student population.  Many of the programs offered are the first of their kind in an Ontario school, a testament to the innovation of our staff and their dedication to our students.

Strategic Plan

The 2018-2019 school year brought with it the end of our five-year strategic plan. Administration and the Board of Trustees undertook an extensive consultation process that included months of consultations and gathering of feedback from stakeholders. Using the feedback gathered, the 2019-2024 Strategic Plan was created. The plan includes a new vision statement:

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board puts students first by creating a culture of learning.

The plan also includes updated areas of focus:

  • Student Achievement: Ensure the necessary resources are provided to all students to increase their individual achievement.
  • Safe and Supportive Schools: Ensure all students and staff have safe learning and working environments, where the academic and mental health needs of the child are met.
  • Innovative Practice: Demonstrate effective “Change Ready” leadership.
  • Reconciliation: Ensure all school and staff are actively engaged in responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.

Board Continuous Improvement Plan

Academic Success for All

In the KPDSB we are committed to improving student achievement by using targeted, evidence-based strategies. To do this, we are effectively and efficiently allocating appropriate resources, including professional learning to support these strategies, all the while ensuring proper monitoring and ongoing system-wide evaluation in order to meet identified needs.

Our goal is to close the achievement gap between our students and the province in mathematics. We implemented a targeted intervention strategy in focus schools that had large gaps by providing ongoing central support through our Student Achievement team. Teachers, along with their administrators, engage together in professional learning as well as receive individual support in the classroom. Learning focussed on good math instruction, using problem-solving, working with numbers, mastering math facts, applying an understanding of number properties and developing proficiency with operations, as well as good assessment strategies support student learning.

In Grade 3, our Board average of students achieving level three and four was 45%, compared to the province with 58%. In Grade 6, 42% of our students achieved level three and four compared to the province with 48%. Our Grade 6 students saw an increase of 17% from the previous year.

While it’s important to recognize that our focus on using evidence-based strategies are yielding success, we will continue to provide the necessary resources and supports along with the ongoing monitoring and system-wide evaluation to ensure overall student achievement.
