Michelle: A KPDSB partnership between Looking Ahead Clinical Services provides students with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder the opportunity to participate in an evidence based social skills program, run by a therapist who is supervised by a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst and the Ontario Autism Program clinical supervisors. \

Janet: With this program, participating students between the ages of 4 and 18, can learn more about relationship boundaries, interpersonal skills, and age appropriate self-regulation skills related to emotions and calming.

Michelle: The program runs three times annually, with one of these occurring in the summer months. This provides the schools with the just right timing to ensure our students get the most out of this when they are ready for the program.

Janet: When we asked a student what they thought of the program, he let us know it is something he enjoys learning from and said, “I am excited to learn about my feelings and stuff.” Given this enthusiasm, we’re happy to have this partnership and feel it is one more way we put students first at KPDSB.

My son participated in the Peers program and the Circles program that was provided by the high school. He was hesitant to join but with a little bit of encouragement, he agreed to do it and participated really well and seemed to enjoy the program. The Peers program that I was able to see from home, he enjoyed the back and forth conversation he had with the two other peers that joined and so far the peers from the one peer from the program has sent him a letter and he has sent her a letter back as well and hopefully their connection can keep going but it’s been quite a while so we’ll see but for all in all the program was a success and I think he enjoyed it.
